Ingredients
For the Cake:
3cups all-purpose flour
2 ½tsp baking powder
½tsp baking soda
1tsp salt
1cup unsalted butter, softened
2cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs, room temperature
1tbsp vanilla extract
1 ½cups whole milk, room temperature
Food coloring (pink, blue, purple, yellow)
For the Buttercream Frosting:
1 ½cups unsalted butter, softened
6cups powdered sugar
2tsp vanilla extract
4tbsp milk
Food coloring for pastel colors
Edible glitter or gold powder (optional for decoration)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
Prepare the Cake Batter: In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and airy. Gradually add the eggs, mixing one at a time, then blend in the vanilla for a smooth texture. Gradually add the flour mixture, alternating with milk, until smooth.
Color the Batter: Divide the batter evenly among four bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl (one color per bowl) and mix well.
Bake: Pour each color into its own prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out free of batter. Cool completely.
Make the Frosting: Beat butter until fluffy, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Add milk until smooth and creamy. Divide and color the frosting as desired.
Assemble the Cake: Place the first layer on a cake stand, spread frosting between each layer. Apply a crumb coat and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Decorate: Frost the entire cake, using colored frosting for a "unicorn mane" effect. Dust with edible glitter for extra sparkle if desired.

Even Layers: Use a scale to ensure each layer has an equal amount of batter for even baking.
Color Popping: Use gel food colors for a vibrant effect without thinning the batter.
