Regarding the first part, it’s rumored that its creator, bartender Douglas Ankrah, envisioned it as something a porn star might order, while other accounts suggest he drew inspiration from the scent of a stripper's perfume.
Regardless, this delightful blend of vanilla and passion fruit, paired with a splash of sparkling wine, has traveled far beyond its roots at London’s Townhouse bar in the early 2000s. Now embraced by bars worldwide, this audaciously named cocktail has established itself as a modern classic.
Why Is It Called a Porn Star Martini?
In his 2004 book Shaken & Stirred, Douglas Ankrah reveals that the drink was initially named the Maverick Martini, inspired by a gentleman's club he visited in Cape Town, South Africa, before it gained popularity as the Porn Star Martini.
In 2019, the Portman Group, a U.K. alcohol industry trade association, mandated that retailer Marks & Spencer rebrand their canned version after receiving complaints about the original title's suggestive connotations. As a result, many brands have since adopted the more innocuous name "Passion Star Martini" to avoid the cocktail's risqué associations.
- 1 1/2 ounces vanilla vodka
- 1/2 ounce passion fruit liqueur (like Passoã or De Kuyper)
- 1 ounce passion fruit puree
- 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 ounce vanilla simple syrup
- 2 ounces chilled sparkling wine
- 1/2 fresh passion fruit for Garnish
- Combine all ingredients except the sparkling wine in a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously until well chilled.
- Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
