Although marketed as "extra spicy," which is the highest heat level the chain offers, the new Hot Orange Chicken at Panda Express has left some heat enthusiasts underwhelmed.

Panda Express has introduced a new limited-time Hot Orange Chicken, designed to spice up their well-loved Original Orange Chicken. While the Original version features crispy chicken in a sweet and mildly spicy orange sauce, the Hot Orange Chicken aims for a much fiercer heat profile, boasting six scoops of crushed chilis and dried chilis similar to those used in the Kung Pao Chicken. It's labeled on the menu as “extra spicy,” claiming to be the hottest option available at Panda Express.

However, reactions to its heat level are mixed. Some Reddit users who sampled the Hot Orange Chicken reported only a “slight burning sensation,” with others feeling it was “barely any different than the regular version” and even one going so far as to call it “sugar chicken.”

It seems Panda Express might need to turn up the heat even more to satisfy true spice lovers. This isn’t the first time the chain has revamped its Orange Chicken; previous variations include a sandwich in 2021, a bao mashup in 2022, and a vegan option. The trend of experimenting with their iconic dish appears to be ongoing.

The Hot Orange Chicken is available nationwide at Panda Express until June 23.
