Mozzarella Sticks (String Cheese): Perfectly Fried and Golden
Mozzarella sticks are a beloved appetizer known for their crispy golden exterior and irresistibly gooey cheese center. They are a perfect party snack, game-day treat, or indulgent side dish served alongside marinara sauce. The combination of a crunchy breadcrumb coating and warm, stretchy mozzarella cheese makes them a favorite among both kids and adults.
These delicious cheese sticks are made by coating mozzarella string cheese in flour, dipping it in an egg wash, and then rolling it in seasoned breadcrumbs. To achieve the perfect crunch, the coating process is repeated to ensure a thick, crispy shell that keeps the cheese from leaking out. Freezing the sticks before frying is a crucial step, as it prevents the cheese from melting too quickly in hot oil.
Frying at the right temperature—around 350°F (175°C)—results in a beautifully crisp texture while keeping the inside warm and gooey. However, if you prefer a lighter version, mozzarella sticks can also be baked or air-fried. Baking at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes or air-frying at the same temperature for 6-8 minutes provides a healthier alternative while still delivering a satisfying crunch.
Mozzarella sticks are best enjoyed fresh and hot, served with a classic marinara sauce. However, they also pair well with ranch dressing, garlic aioli, or spicy sriracha mayo for a flavorful twist. Whether you're hosting a party, looking for a quick snack, or craving comfort food, homemade mozzarella sticks are a simple yet incredibly delicious treat that never disappoints.

12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
1cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
2tablespoons milk
1 ½cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
1/2teaspoon garlic powder
1/2teaspoon onion powder
1/2teaspoon paprika
1/2teaspoon salt
1/4teaspoon black pepper
1/2cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
1cup marinara sauce (for dipping)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Coating
Cut each mozzarella stick in half to make 24 smaller pieces (optional).
Place flour in one shallow bowl.
In a second bowl, whisk the eggs with milk.
In a third bowl, mix breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese.
Step 2: Coat the Cheese
Roll each mozzarella stick in flour, shaking off the excess.
Dip into the egg mixture, then coat in the breadcrumb mixture.
Repeat by dipping again into the egg and breadcrumbs for a double coating (this helps prevent cheese from leaking out).
Place coated sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour (prevents melting while frying).
Step 3: Fry the Mozzarella Sticks
Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
Fry mozzarella sticks in batches for 30-60 seconds per side, until golden brown.
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy!
Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.
