Here’s What We Really Think of Cheetos Flamin’ Hot Mac and Cheese

When I first heard that Cheetos Mac ‘N Cheese would be hitting Walmart shelves nationwide for just 98 cents a box or cup in 2021, I felt a surge of excitement. Without a second thought, I was eager to sample the new flavors, including Cheesy Jalapeño, Bold & Cheesy, and Flamin’ Hot. Ah, the simple pleasures of artificial flavors and colors! Finally, something to shake up the routine of these challenging times!

My main focus was on the Flamin’ Hot flavor, which has intrigued me ever since my visit to the Cheetos Museum back in 2017. To get straight to the point, I've only tried the microwavable cup for this review. Here are my honest impressions.

Preparation Made Easy

Like other microwavable mac and cheese products, no butter or milk is needed. Just remove the lid and flavor packet, fill the cup with water to the designated line, stir, and microwave for about three minutes. Then, mix in the flavor packet and microwave for another three minutes to thicken the sauce around the corkscrew noodles, which are supposedly inspired by Chester the Cheetah’s tail. The seasoning packet contains Flamin’ Hot “Cheetle” (a.k.a. Cheetos dust). After mixing, you should end up with a dish that looks like this…

The Eye-Catching Color

I must admit, the bright red color was alarming at first. Just as ketchup shouldn't be purple, mac and cheese probably shouldn’t be red. However, since this shade matches that of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, I tried to overlook it. I wiped off the extra “sauce” from the sides of the cup, which looked a bit menacing, and was ready to dig in.

Final Thoughts

To be completely honest, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of a strong cheese flavor in this mac and cheese. Nevertheless, I still hold out hope for the Bold & Cheesy flavor! Regardless, trying Cheetos Mac ‘N Cheese is worth the 98 cents for the excitement and novelty alone.
