Coke Zero vs Diet Coke

Are Diet Coke and Coke Zero made from the same ingredients, and do they taste alike? You may be surprised by the findings from our research.

The Rise of the Diet Soda

Coke Zero vs. Diet Coke: a battle of giants in the beverage industry. Growing up in the ’80s, Diet Coke was my go-to drink. Sorry, Tab—your pink cans may have been stylish, but the taste just didn’t cut it. (Curious about the most popular soda from your childhood? Find out here!)

Launched in the summer of 1982, Diet Coke was revolutionary, setting a new standard for low-calorie beverages. Finally, there was a diet soda that didn’t scream "low-cal" with every sip. Back then, I couldn’t fathom Coca-Cola producing another diet option.

However, everything changed in 2005 with the introduction of Coke Zero. Someone at Coca-Cola wanted to create a diet drink that more closely resembled the flavor of a full-sugar Coke. Did they succeed? Do these two beverages truly taste different, or is Coke Zero just riding on a trendy name?

Are Diet Coke and Coke Zero Different?

Both Diet Coke and Coke Zero boast zero sugar and calories, and their ingredient lists show some similarities. Each contains carbonated water, caramel color, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate, aspartame, natural flavors, and caffeine (both options have caffeine-free versions available—just look for the gold-accented packaging).

However, Coke Zero includes two ingredients absent in Diet Coke: potassium citrate and acesulfame potassium. Conversely, Diet Coke contains citric acid, which is not found in Coke Zero.

According to Anna Wheeler, health and nutrition manager for Coca-Cola Great Britain, “Coca-Cola Zero Sugar looks and tastes more like Coca-Cola Classic, while Diet Coke has a lighter taste because it’s made with a different blend of flavors.”

Taste Test: Diet Coke vs. Coke Zero

I chilled cans of both Diet Coke and Coke Zero for a side-by-side taste test, sipping them without ice to avoid dilution.

Drinking Diet Coke brought back memories of its groundbreaking debut in the ’80s. It’s smooth and sweet, and my initial thought wasn’t, “ugh, this is a diet soda.” It’s enjoyable, bubbly, and pairs well with meals while being refreshing on its own. Although I never mistook it for full-sugar Coke, it remains an excellent diet option.

Coke Zero underwent a reformulation last summer, and I previously expressed my dissatisfaction with the new flavor. I found it somewhat sour, with a spiciness not present in older versions. However, this time, I didn't notice that sourness. Instead, Coke Zero tasted smoother and sweeter than Diet Coke, and I found it even more effervescent.

Which One Do We Prefer?

Coke Zero comes out on top for me. If offered a choice by a flight attendant or a vending machine, I would always choose Coke Zero.

Many cola enthusiasts still lament the loss of the previous Coke Zero formulation, and I understand their sentiment. When I first compared the old and new formulas, I preferred the old one. But I can’t dwell in the past. This version of Coke Zero is what we have now, and I’m happy to enjoy it.

Why Coke Tastes Better at McDonald’s

Have you ever wondered why Coke from McDonald's tastes different (and better) than anywhere else? The answer lies in their unique serving and storage methods.
