Many fast-food chains have attempted it, but few have succeeded in crafting a burger that rivals the iconic double-decker that has been cherished worldwide for decades. Yes, we’re talking about the Big Mac.

With its classic combination of "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun," the Big Mac has reigned as the most popular burger on the McDonald’s menu since its debut in 1967. But now, a formidable new contender is entering the fray, and it comes from none other than McDonald’s itself.

After all, if anyone can surpass McDonald’s, it’s McDonald’s.

Introducing the Big Arch Burger

Last week, McDonald’s unveiled its latest heavyweight: the Big Arch. Fans are encouraged to bring their biggest appetites because this new creation is the largest on the menu and promises even more flavor.

Designed to “satisfy the extra hungry,” this double-decker features two quarter-pound, 100% beef patties. Weighing in at an impressive 14 ounces, the Big Arch nearly doubles the size of the classic Big Mac, which weighs around 7.6 ounces. Simply put, this burger could make a meal of the Big Mac.

Though it doesn’t quite match the Double Big Mac—which made a grand return earlier this year—the Big Arch now stands as the heavyweight champion of standard double-patty burgers.

Alongside the extra-large patties, the Big Arch has a few distinct differences from the Big Mac. Instead of the single slice of yellow American cheese on the original, the new burger features three slices of white processed cheese. It also includes two types of onions: slivered onions and crispy onions, rather than the rehydrated kind typically used on most sandwiches.

Naturally, the Big Arch couldn’t use the classic Big Mac sauce, so McDonald’s developed a brand-new tangy sauce specifically for this burger. And as for the bun, they upgraded from the standard sesame bun to one with poppy seeds.

With crispy onions, a zesty new sauce, and extra-beefy patties, the Big Arch promises not only to be bigger but potentially tastier than the traditional Big Mac. Fans have already dubbed it their "new favorite."

“Hot take, but it’s way better than a Big Mac!” exclaimed one reviewer.

However, before you get too excited to try this beefed-up burger, there’s a catch: it’s currently only available in Portugal and Canada. Nonetheless, early feedback from these markets is promising, with fans eagerly calling for a broader release.

“I was in Portugal the week it launched,” said one fan. “I had it three times that week—it was incredible. This needs to be a permanent item in the U.S.”

All that extra beef comes with a higher price tag. The Big Arch is priced at $9.99 CAD, or about $7.37 USD—over $2 more than a Big Mac. But with nearly 50% more meat, that extra cost seems justified.

There’s no official word yet on when—or if—the Big Arch will make its way to U.S. menus, but there’s hope that a successful run in Canada could pave the way for this mega burger to come stateside. After all, McDonald’s has a talent for turning international favorites into American hits.
