Description
Baked Tequeños: Perfectly Baked, Rich, and Cheesy Bliss
Te-queños are a beloved Venezuelan snack made of crispy, golden dough wrapped around a warm, gooey cheese filling. Traditionally, they are deep-fried, but this baked version provides a healthier alternative without sacrificing flavor or texture. Perfect for parties, gatherings, or simply as a delicious treat, baked te-queños offer a delightful balance of crunch and cheesy goodness in every bite.
This dish has its origins in Venezuela, where te-queños are a staple at celebrations, served as appetizers, or enjoyed with coffee. The dough is simple, made with flour, butter, water, and a pinch of salt, resulting in a slightly crispy yet tender texture when baked. The cheese inside, often queso blanco or mozzarella, melts perfectly, creating a soft, stringy filling. While deep-fried te-queños are more common, baking them offers a less greasy, lighter version that is just as satisfying.
One of the best things about it is their versatility. They can be served with a variety of dipping sauces, such as guasacaca (Venezuelan avocado sauce), garlic sauce, or even a simple marinara. You can also experiment with different cheeses, from mild mozzarella to a more flavorful feta or cheddar blend.
This baked tequeño recipe is easy to follow and great for meal prepping. You can make a batch, freeze them, and bake them whenever you need a quick snack. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or just craving something cheesy and delicious, and are the perfect treat.
